New Android 5 Lollipop Visual Interfaces

Just installed the new Android 5 Lollipop OS on Google LG Nexus 5. There were a number of visual changes. First thing I noticed was the home page buttons and the soft buttons (see screen shot below).

The home page button is now white. The soft buttons now looks like buttons from Sony PlayStation controller. Only the X button is missing.

The app list has changed. Now it is white background (see screen shot below). I prefer the dark background. Wonder why they changed it.

The notification pull down has changed as well (see screen shot below). It now show both date and time. That is really convenient, because my lock screen is disabled and I always have to go into Calendar to see the current date.

If you tap the top right corner of the pulled down notification bar, you will see more system status (see screen shot below). You can tap on the icons to go to settings or other screens.

The keyboard got a brand new look. It now has a bright background (see screen shot below). And they is no distinctive breaks between the characters. The caret has also changed to a water drop shape.

I personally prefer a darker keyboard. I write a lot on my phone... like this blog post. I don't need a bright keyboard to draw my attention away.

Good news is that Google provides four keyboard themes: Material Light, Material Dark, Halo White, and Halo Blue. The Halo theme is the old keyboard with distinctive character breaks. You can change the theme in Android settings.

The task interface has been changed. It has a more artistic effect with less linear animation. You can now swipe to close app or use the X button to the top right corner of each app (see photo below).

By the way, Google Chrome is now integrated into the tasks list. When you have multiple browser tabs, each one shows up as a task in the list.

Prior to Android 5, I would always tap the taks list (bottom of the display) when I mean to tap the tabs list (top of the display). I am glad to see Google making a huge usability improvement here.
