How to Get the Marble Out of Ramune

My wife has been spoiling my kids with Ramune, Japanese soda drink with a marble inside the bottle, over the past few years. Recently, my kids has become old enough to ask for the marble inside the bottle (see photo below). When I can, I don't say "no" to my kids. So over the past few weeks, I've been coming up with way to get the marble out of the bottle.

I'm sure everyone has thought of trying to use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the cap off. I've done it. I can tell you right now that is not the fastest way. In addition, you'll be applying so much strength and so much time that it could be dangerous--if not potentially knifing yourself or your children with the screwdriver, then dying of banging your head on the wall.

Probably the fastest way is to throw the bottle on the ground until it breaks. But just think of the clean up chore. Plus, it is definitely not safe. And how are you going to recycle that bottle?

Over the past few weeks as I meticulously pull each marble out of the Ramune bottle, I've come up with the quickest way, without destroying the bottle altogether. In this article, I will show you the surest, the safest, and the fastest way to getting the marble out.

Plastic Top

There are currently two types of Ramune bottles. One type has the plastic top as shown in the photo below. Most of the Ramune bottles are this type. Be sure to wash the inside and outside of the bottle to get rid of the sticky soda before you start.

The easiest way to pop this plastic top off is with a mini hacksaw and a flat-head screwdriver. The photo below shows an example of a mini hacksaw. The saw blade sticks out so that you can insert into the top of the bottle and cut a slit into the plastic.

You'll want to use the mini hacksaw to cut a slit inside the plastic top, outside the plastic top, and around the top (see photo below).

Then get a strong flat-head screwdriver, like the one shown in the photo below.

Use the sturdy flat-head screw driver to pry the plastic top at the slit. With a bit of work, the plastic top will pop off.

The photo below shows the plastic top has been pried off the bottle. The marble has been released.

Aluminum Top

Some of the Ramune bottles now have the aluminum top (see photo below). But the aluminum is so thin and soft, they are really not much harder to pop than the plastic ones. In fact, they might be easier.

The mini hacksaw and flat-head screwdriver method outlined for the plastic top will work for this type of top. I have only had one such bottle, so I have not come up with any other methods to pop a aluminum top bottle.
