Free ChatGPT vs. Free Gemini -- Who Wins?

After trying Muse (Meta's AI assistant for the first time and seeing it fail right off the bat, I sit down to write my "First Time Trying Muse: It Already Failed!" article. Of course, it's the perfect opportunity to give generative AI a spin. At this time, I am only using free generative AI accounts--ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, Grok, etc.--to see how far each one could take me.

Just to be fair, unbiased, and transparent, I used Grok--rather than ChatGPT or Gemini--to help me write this article and I wrote about half of it by hand.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

After several days of zero activity, I opened the free ChatGPT account and sent the first prompt of the day with three images for the article. The results were immediate, revealing, and very unexpected.

It successfully attached two screenshots. But the third screenshot failed. Even though the account had been idle for days, the free tier still enforced a file-attachment ceiling on the third image, meaning you can only attach two images a day. The "Upgrade" button sat front and center.

ChatGPT killed itself dead in the water for this simple task. Zero article generated, because it can't even see the third screenshot.

Completely Useless

At one point of writing this article, I couldn't remember how to spell, "minuscule". So I thought I'd give ChatGPT a redeeming chance. But guess what!? It spelled it as "miniscule"! If I didn't have a hint of an idea that it was misspelled, I would have used that word in this article. That's two-for-two. ChatGPT feels completely useless this morning. All it did was waste my time. It certainly did not inspire me to pay for upgrade.

Grok, on the other hand, picked up the misspelling right away. It help me retain my dignity within this article.

Gemini (Google)

Gemini had no problem accepting three screenshots. The interface accepted a brand-new prompt that included screenshots and immediately began generating a full article titled "First Time Trying Muse: It Already Failed." No attachment limit, no daily cooldown, no upgrade prompt. In about fifteen minutes, with my writing and editing incorporated, I posted the article.

Grok (xAI)

Grok wasn't part of this test, because Gemini succeeded in writing the article and I didn't have to try Grok on it instead. But Grok did write part of this article with two attached screenshots. So it can't be directly compared to the prior two AI. But here is a little bit of my experience generating this article.

Grok needed more help. The article that it generated wasn't as thorough nor as complete as the Gemini article; granted they were different articles. I was able to use 90% of Gemini's article, whereas, I edited and wrote more than 50% of Grok's article. But, hey, it generated an article the first time I asked itto ; ChatGPT should be ashamed. I did attach a third image to Grok's next prompt--just to test it--and it accepted it.

Verdict

On this particular morning, free Gemini won cleanly. It treated the idle free account as still usable for multi-modal work, while free ChatGPT treated the same period of inactivity as irrelevant and still enforced its miniscule attachment ceiling.

For anyone who occasionally needs to drop screenshots or files into a conversation without paying, the free tier of Gemini currently offers a smoother experience. ChatGPT's free plan remains useful for pure text, but the moment images enter the picture, the daily limit becomes the deciding factor--even after days of rest.
