Using AI Assistance to Start a Word Feud Game

In this article, we present methods to use Generative AI to help us unscramble letters to make words for Scrabble-like games. It doesn't play the game for us. Instead, it assists us in the game play. In this example, we use Microsoft Copilot. ChatGPT and other AI services will work similarly.

It is my turn to go first on the new Wordfeud game above. Given the letters I received. I input the following prompt into Copilot:

Make words using y e g o r y o.

The following is Copilot's response:

Sure thing! Here are some words we can create using the letters y, e, g, o, r, and o:

  1. Gory
  2. Grey
  3. Ogre
  4. Rye
  5. Goer

These combinations should help! If you have any more sets of letters or need assistance with anything else, feel free to share. 😊

Copilot came up with five 4 letter words. It's definitely sufficient for me to play one of those words, pick up the triple word (TW) square, and start off with 27 points as follows:

But there is something unsettling about leaving a double word (DW) square behind. Are there any five letter words in these scrambled letters? So I try again with the following prompt.

Make words at least 5 letters long with y e g o r y o.

Copilot responded with:

Absolutely! Here are some words that are at least 5 letters long using the letters y, e, g, o, r, y, and o:

  1. Gooey
  2. Orgy
  3. Gyros

Finding words with a minimum length of 5 using these specific letters was quite a challenge! If you have other sets of letters or need further assistance, feel free to let me know. 😊

Sure enough, three suggestions came out of Copilot. One of the words is AI hallucination, which is still a valid four letter word. But the other two word suggestions are perfect for me to pick up the DW square. Placing the word "GOOEY" in the following manner allowed me to more than double my starting points:

It's disappointing that Copilot only made four letter words in this case, which made me wonder if other AI services, such as ChatGPT, will make longer words by default. I'm also wondering if there is a better prompt that would provide a more comprehensive word list. What do you think?
