Halloween FX #3: Creating Eerie Sounds on Your Electronic KeyboardWhile playing around with my children's Kawasaki toy keyboard, I accidently played some horrific and frightening sounds. All it takes is five keys on the electronic keyboard: C C# D D# E. Play these keys randomly on the keyboard and you'll have some scary music. For musical beginners, these five keys are the three white keys surrounding the two black keys (see photo below). The two black keys are C# and D#. The white keys are C D E. You can try different octaves for different atmosphere. But the typical piano doesn't sound that frightening. The Kawasaki toy keyboard can simulate various musical instruments. On this keyboard, the best instrument for eerie music is the chime. With these five keys, this electronic keyboard becomes a horrific sound machine. I couldn't find the chime instrument on my Casio WK-500 digital keyboard. But I have found several other tones that works just as well or even better than the Kawasaki toy keyboard. On the Casio WK-500, try "Space Choir (429)" or "Space Voice (452)". I find these tones quite satisfying to create frightening atmosphere. If you don't have either of these electronic keyboards, don't fret. Try different tones with these five keys. You'll surely find a tone that is creepy and great for Halloween. Chieh Cheng
