Attracting Predatory Birds to Deal with Gophers in Your BackyardThere are several ways to attract predatory birds to your backyard, and the benefits are great if you have gophers. Since hawks, falcons, and owls are all predatory birds that dine on gophers with regularity, it only takes common sense and a little research to learn that these are the birds you want to attract. All birds require water. Keep ample supplies either in birdbaths, large shallow pans or even a child's wading pool full of clean water in your backyard. Not only do the birds like to get a drink from these vessels, they like to bathe in them as well. Keep all grass and weeds cut short. Do not plant shrubbery where you have a gopher problem. Long grasses or shrubbery can make it more difficult for the bird to see the gopher. All birds like to have either a home near the hunting grounds or at the very least a comfortable place to sit and wait from. Build a few nesting boxes large enough for them and put up a perch pole or two. If you have pets, confine them to the front yard. Often, a dog or cat present will scare the predatory birds away. If the bird should be brave enough to try to get the gopher anyway, and your pet should decide to investigate, your pet may become inured by the sharp talons and beaks on the predatory birds. Following these simple suggestions will make your backyard much more friendly to the predatory birds and not so friendly to the gophers. Camillicat
