Apple iPhone 5 Charging Strangeness

I just got an Apple iPhone 5 recently. I took it on a trip this past weekend and forgotten the proprietary USB cable (why iPhone 5 has it's own special USB cable rather than the standard USB cable is beyond me). On the way back from the trip, the phone rand out of battery and turned off. After getting home, I plugged in the special USB cable and plugged it into the wall. I saw the following symbol on the screen.

I didn't know what that symbol means. It looks like iPhone 5 is telling me that it is low on battery. But it's plugged it. Why isn't it charging? Normally, I would expect to see a thunder bolt or a progress to indicate it is charging.

I pulled out the USB cable and try it again. As I was pulling it out, I saw the following symbol flash by on the screen.

That was interesting. The second symbol actually shows the thunder bolt and the USB cable. Does that mean it is charging?

I plugged the USB cable all the way back in and saw the first symbol. I pulled it out a little bit and saw the second symbol. I left the USB cable pulled out a little bit with the second symbol and let it "charge" for half an hour.

After coming back, the phone still won't powered on. A little frustrated, I decided to plug the cable all the way in, which generated the first symbol. I left it "charging" for a while. The iPhone 5 turned itself on later after it gained enough charge.

So the first symbol is the charging symbol. The second symbol means the USB cable is not plugged all the way in. There is no symbol if the USB cable is unplugged.

Hearing everyone raving about the Apple iPhone, I would think they'd make it more intuitive than what I've seen. But I guess not. The Samsung and LG Android SmartPhones are much more intuitive with its clear indication of charging with the thunder bolt and the battery charging progress display.

Hello!

I have just had the same problem on mi iPhone 5 and was getting worried after about 25 minutes of me noticing it was not working.

I left my phone on last night when I went to bed at 35%. As I woke myself up (fortunately enough as my alarm didn't go off!) I realised that my phone had died last night when I was asleep. I plugged it into the wall and the first symbol came up. I hadn't noticed it before (even though I have had my phone for 1.5 years!), but left it to charge.

Ten minutes later I checked it as all eager phone addicts do, and it still had the same symbol so I unplugged it and your second symbol appeared. I tried blowing inside in case of lint, turned the charger around and nothing was happening.

So I got out of bed and turned on my PC to charge it through my PC. One thing I noticed was that my USB adapter that I originally had it plugged into was absolutely boiling hot. Almost as if it was really trying hard to charge but getting nowhere!

After finding this page and starting to write this reply, my Apple sign popped up on my phone (praise the lord).

Thank you very much.

Dan.
