Creative MuVo^2 Windows 98 Driver won't install on Windows 98!My Sony VAIO notebook is the most portable personal computer I own. At last than one inch thick, it's hard to beat by any notebooks today. I love taking this notebook to different places. It is also 8 years old, which means it can only run Windows 98. So I needed to take this notebook this weekend along with my Creative MuVo2 MP3 player for data storage, but I have never installed the MuVo^2 driver on this computer. So I went to the Creative web site to download the Creative MuVo Windows 98 Driver version 1.07.03 to install. This installation is distributed as an executable (EXE) file, so I double clicked on it. Instead of installing the driver, I got an error message: "This installation only supports Windows 98. Installation will now exit." Attached Image: Chieh Cheng Ummmmm . . . as far as I can tell, my Sony VAIO notebook is still running Windows 98. The General System Properties dialog box shows that it is running Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998. So why is the driver installation program not working? Sometime I really wonder how companies write their driver installation software. How do they detect which operating system it's running on? It's no wonder end users have so much problems with new gadgets. I really wish companies would stop writing operating system checks on driver installation. It seems to create more headaches for users than solving problems. And it limits potential software use (see my "How to get the FujiFilm Advantix Image-Scanner AS-1 Filmscan-it to work with Windows XP" article). Well, I'm out of time for this weekend. And looks like I won't be taking the MuVo^2 along with me after all. I guess it's just another win for my Rio Carbon. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng After running the driver installation executable, I found that it is using the WISE installation routine. So I searched for "wise installation extract", hoping I can extract the driver myself for installation. The search got me to a web page called "Mark's 14 protector's commandments", where I found that WISE installation executable accepts several command-line arguments:
Using the extract mode, I found the following attached screen. Wow! Now I'm getting somewhere. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng Success! It turned out that the four files that need to be extracted are ctums.inf, CTUMS.sys, ctums.uns, and CTUMSP.pdr. With these four files in a directory and Windows hardware installation wizard pointed to that directory, the driver will install just fine. Now, that's a lot of work for just installing a single driver for a MP3 player on Windows 98. And I have an advantage at doing this kind of work because I'm a computer scientist. It'll be hard for a typical consumer to install a driver like I did. Consumer electronics companies gotta get their act together at creating better driver installation software than the Creative MuVo2 has provided. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
