vncviewer Doesn't Work with Mac OS X Screen Sharing

I just tried to connect to my Mac OS X (10.5.8) using VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.2 for X, which is distributed by RealVNC. Upon producing the following output after attempting to connect, vncviewer exits immediately:

The solution, I found, is to install Vine Server, an open source VNC server on Mac OS X. vncviewer has no problem connecting to the Vine Server.
