Unable to Uninstall a Windows XP Device Driver

I'm over here setting up a new Windows XP installation. And trying to install the device driver for this Agere SpeedTouch Wireless Network PC Card.

I couldn't find the right driver, so I tried a driver for a similar but different network card. As soon as I plug in the card, the driver hangs the system. I figured that it's no problem, I'd just get rid of the driver in Safe Mode. But, instead of getting rid of the driver, Device Manager reported an error message:

Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer.

I have never seen that message before. Trying to uninstall the driver after starting Windows normally also shows the same error message. Even deactivating the driver in Device Manager still causes the uninstallation to fail.

Finally, the solution was to click on the "Update Driver..." button and update it to a different driver that I selected from the "Have Disk..." list. Once the new driver was install, I was able to remove it completely.

Unfortunately, removing the driver didn't solve the problem. Once I inserted The Agere SpeetTouch 110 Wireless Network PC Card into the computer, Windows XP associated it to the bad driver that I chose last time.

The only way I was able to finally resolve the issue is to use Windows XP "System Restore" to restore my computer to an earlier System Checkpoint.
