Running Win 95/98 only applications on Windows XPThere are numerous times when I run legacy applications on Windows XP and get the "This install does not currently support Windows 2000." message. Many of these legacy software could only be installed on Windows 95/98 operating systems. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng At that point, I'm either stuck, or I derive a hack that allows me to circumvant the installer. But last night, I found out that many times, I won't even have to derive a hack. Because Windows XP comes with built-in legacy compatibility support. All you have to do is right click on the application that you want to run, click on "Properties", and then click on the "Compatibility" tab". Then simply check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select an operating system (see picture below). The following operating systems are supported: Windows 95 No more legacy incompatibility messages. Of course, there are installers that do more than merely check for the Windows version that you are running. Some of them requires special legacy directory structures, resources, or dynamic link libraries (DLL). I bumped into that last night with the Socket DPC Digital Phone Card. But for everything else, this built-in support is quite handy. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
