Configure Automatic Updates CorrectlyBeing a computer guru I rarely look up at too much automation. But Microsoft's Automatic Update is a feature that I rely on to keep our computers free of bugs and spyware. However, I learned from my wife's notebook computer that Automatic Update rarely works when configured in the default manner. When my wife's computer became filled with spyware, I was puzzled why her "Add/Remove Programs" list do not show the latest updates. It turned out that if you turned on Automatic Update when you first bought your notebook computer, few updates ever made it onto your computer. That is because by default, Automatic Update runs at 3AM (see screen shot below). It's quite rare for casual users to ever leave their computer on over-night. Plus, if you've got a notebook computer, it hibernates by default after a few minutes. The first thing you gotta do is to reconfigure Automatic Updates to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them." That option allows Automatic Updates to run whenever your computer is on. You can open Automatic Updates by right clicking on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
