Report an alOBD Scanner(tm) Series Problem

cannot get bluetooth to connect with scanner, program just keeps freezing up every time

Braden,
Thank you for using the application. In order to help you, I'd like to know what Android device you're using and what Bluetooth adapter.

When you plug the Bluetooth into the car's OBDII port, is there indicator light that turns on (power)? When the phone is attempting to connect to Bluetooth, is there lights activity?

After you Android device locks up, do you have to power-cycle it to recover? Can you connect to any other Bluetooth device with your Android? Does it work?

You could try to reboot the Android device. Then use System Preferences to turn it on and pair with the Bluetooth. Once successfully paired, start the alOBD and attempt to connect (Menu->Bluetooth->Scan and Connect). Before reading any info from the vehicle, ensure the Ignition Key is in "accessories" (ACC) position.

Thank you again.

I am able to click on and see the bluetooth device, but no price or availability.
The manual does not open up and I cannot see disclaimer or agreement.

Mr. Collier,
Thank you for your interest in my application. I am not sure which problem you are describing, but will attempt to address as I understand it.

The manual for the application is located on

http://www.alobdscanner.com

website where you can find a lot of information including how to pair with a Bluetooth adapter.

If you need a Bluetooth adapter, checkout www.plxdevices.com or look for 'ELM Bluetooth Adapter" on eBay.

Thank you very much again, and I hope I addressed your concerns.

Using Android IOBD Scanner 05.08.10.01 Dec 26, 2011
on Motorola Droid 2 Global (Verizon)
Android 2.2

Car is 1997 BMW 328iC

When IOBD connects to PLXD-A082 module the scanner seems to access the data OK but immediatly gives the error msg "Invalid_VIN"

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Mr. Binns,
Thank you for using the app.

The Invalid_VIN message may indicate that the VIN of your vehicle does not match the accepted VIN format. However, some cars may not have VIN programmed into their DMEs, therefore the app reports that the VIN is invalid. It only needs with VIN to mark data being saved, so the owner can distinguish the data from multiple cars. Please ignore the invalid VIN message - it just means your vehicle does not have VIN information in the computer. The rest of the features of the app should work correctly.

Thank you.

I have installed the SW on my Android Samsung Captivate and it all seemed OK. The ELM 327 came in the mail and I plugged it into my 2007 Honda Civic. I noticed that the unit paired OK and seems to be communicating but I do not see the "TOOLS" or "VOICE" menu choices. When I select any PID and press start nothing happens. Can you help?
thanks,
Russell

Russell,
Thank you for your interest in the app. You didn't clarify which version you've installed. alOBD Scanner app does not have TOOLS and VOICE menu, those features are only available in the alOBD ScanGenPro app.
In any case, try selecting Engine Speed (RPM) parameter and push start. Observe if lights are flashing on the ELM327 indicating it's communicating with the phone. If so, start the vehicle's - the car's computer only communicates in Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) and Key On Engine Running (KOER), but the port is powered at all times. So if the ignition key is off, the ELM would still have the power light on, but would not communicate.
If you still cannot read RPM on the running engine, tap the stop button and select ELM Reset PID, followed by tapping on the start button. It should stop after one shot, if not, select stop. Select ELM Display Protocol and start. Do this for all ELM commands. Please report back the findings.
Please note that ELM commands communicate with device only and not with the car. If none of the ELM commands work - it indicates that ELM and Phone are not functioning together. Try pairing again, try turning Bluetooth off and on and/or rebooting the phone.

Thank you.

Alexandre,
Thanks for the quick reply. All is communicating fine now. The other issue I have is that when I stop a command the screen is split vertically with a big 0.00 on the left half and just about 10 characters of the command list on the right side. Any suggestions? Thanks for a great program.

Russell,
You can slide the numbers to the left to see list of PIDs over the entire range of the screen. The split remains on the screen after the stop in case you want to see what the value was to help you decide which PID to select next.

Likewise sliding up and down when started will show numeric display full screen or a graph full screen.

Thank you.

Hi Alexandre,

Your apps terminate every command with CR+LF, which occasionally results in the "STOPPED" error.

I'd like to send you an adapter to test -- please contact me off-line.

A number of options fail on start with Java arithmetic exceptions. If you give me a few clues for the information you need, I will try to provide a useful list.

Mr. Evans,

Thank you for using alOBD series of tools. Since the application has been created several years ago now, newer phones/tablets may have evolved beyond the original capability of the programs. If you would provide information on what hardware you're using and which flavor of application (e.g. Pro version or not) as well as what stage the failures occur (e.g. while connected to adapter, prior to connection, etc.) it would be helpful to begin troubleshooting problems.

Also, please keep in mind an update has been scheduled for all applications by the end of April, 2013 which will include re-compilation on new version of the Android Development Kit, the virtual machine as well as improved Bluetooth connection algorithms.

If possible and convenient, please provide the details of failures via e-mail to the address posted in the application'd details screen in Google Play(tm).

Thank you once again for your report and willingness to help.

I have a 2002 chevy express 1500 4.3l V6, I have purchased the aiobdpro and the gm$06 PID
I have a Samsung Note10.1 with Android version 4.1.2 (ICS) - not rooted
when I connect everything seems to work fine - plx device connects, system recognizes and allows me to register PID's, I am able to use slow/fast and start. When I start the line shows progress through a few values and then says an error with javascript values? but the displa shows n/a in three places and then when it stops it just shows a large n/a on the screen with the selections to the right.

Guy,

Thank you for purchasing alOBD series apps. Please accept my apologies for a delayed reply.

From your message it seems that you're doing everything correctly: connecting and pairing the Bluetooth, selecting PIDs and attempting to get data. It appears that you're getting a Java exception that the data retrieved from the car's computer is not in a valid number format that the app could parse. This could mean that one or more PIDs you're trying to get are not supported by your vehicle. Could you give me a list of PIDs you're trying to read. Also, in order to eliminate possible problems elsewhere, please try requesting more generic PIDs such as Engine Speed, Vehicle Speed, Mass Air Flow. Please let me know if you can read those. Another reason is that the PLX adapter you're using may not correctly support Mode $06, but this is a very distant possibility. Please post your results here or to my e-mail. I do apologize for your inconvenience, but sometimes the information you need to read from the vehicle may not be supported and what is supported varies greatly from model to model or in the same model vehicles produced for different countries. In some cases, the app may not be compatible with a particular android device or manufacturer's changes to Bluetooth library.
