g1ok... who preordered the g1?? charlie Ok. Maybe you should tell me what is g1? How about a link? Or maybe you are talking about Canon PowerShot G1, which I think it's way out dated by now. Chieh Cheng then it's not for you...i'm close to pre-order...very tempted...I want to know more though... Paul what's more to know? charlie like waht other restrictions they haven't told us about. And they were vague about the 1GB 3G cap. they took that part out but we still dont' know what they're talking about. is it now 1.01GB? Wireless providers are evil. Paul http://t-mobileg1.com charlie if you still have no clue. it's the google phone running android. i guess you've been too busy writing custom backup scripts to hear about it.. hehehe.. =P charlie okay, i preordered...appreciated if you do likewise...I'll probably need to ask you for help and stuff...we can gtalk! Paul Actually, I've been too busy wrestling with Japanese version of Windows Vista: TakeControlOf.cmd (GPL) Windows Vista's broken security features are a real pain in the ass. I also can't get MOUNTVOL to work on Japanese Windows Vista. If anyone knows the solution, I'd appreciate hear about it. Based on the T-Mobile G1 demo, the T-Mobile G1 is no more than a media phone. It operates just like the LG Dare, a media phone with all the touch features, which is extremely unimpressive and doesn't suit my needs at all. So how is the G1 with Android any better? Are you expecting cool applications to be developed on it? Are you planning on writing your own application? I believe the following are relevant questions that will determine whether Android will be successful. How open is third-party application developement for the average Joe programmer? Can Joe pick one up and write directly on the phone? Does Joe have to buy a SDK? Does Joe's application have to be licensed by T-Mobile and Google? Can Joe distribute it nilly-willy? What are the other Android phones out there? Chieh Cheng according to the press releases and interviews so far.. the answers are yes, yes, yes yes. you can program to core phone levels, it's open source, if you program an app you can put it in the android marketplace and distribute it. i'm sure you can put up your own app as well. sdk is free. i'm sure there will be no licensing issues, most of the stuff is gpl. charlie charlie...wow, cool... but make no mistake...Android phones will not be as open as android devices that are independent of wireless providers. Google is less than truthful when they said that the G1 is open...no VOIP and who know waht else may not be allowed. Google knows this because they never say G1 is open, only android is. Which is fine. they just need to get away from wireless providers...all the manufacturers and system builders should have worked together to get the 700Mhz for themselves. anyway, yes to all your questions. SDK is free and you can write any program you want. But you may not be able to install all the programs you want to get it working because of T-Mobile, not Google or Android. My gripe is that Google is the backbone...that alone, with you only have one provider, just like iPhone has only Apple as it's backbone, is not open. Anyway, I think it offers good functionalities and the only thing is the multi-touch functions on the iPhones. Which is why I'll be buying a new iPod Touch to compensate :) Unless Apple comes out with an iPhone with functions that cannot be duplicated on the iPod Touch, I think I'll stick with T-Mobile. ATT sucks. Chieh, I think you'll like Android phones for the most part. I'm really curious to see how Sprint's Android phones are like and if they are as restriction as I think G1 is at the moment. Paul David Pogue got his.... David what gets me is this... that i heard today... charlie All your phones are belong to us.... David yeah, he got it wrong. T-mobile made sure it won't happen. the guy's a hack. T-Mobile lied to me...I won't get mine G1 until Nov...I'm contemplating cancelling. Tell me it's on back order. Don't tell me it's shipped, then say it's sitting on the dock at their warehouse and then say it's on backorder. and i ordered within that period where I'm suppose to get it by 22nd. No wonder they lost their high customer service award. Paul The article says that T-Mobile plan for the G1 is unlimited. Paul claim otherwise. Who's right? Chieh Cheng when you sign up it says that it's unlimited on t-mobile's site. charlie rate limiting??? as in bandwidth limiting? Chieh Cheng yes. the bandwidth. nothing says they can't squeeze it. charlie it's unlimited up to 1GB but they chagned it to make it vague. Like your sprint service. It's limited up to a point. I think it's 3 or 5GB. anyway, I called to cancel my G1 because I didn't like being told it shipped when it hasn't. The wait is killing me so I rather just not have it. You know, the wait and expectation. But they already shipped it and they're not charging me for it. I think mentioning taking my $300 monthly service to ATT or Verizon helped. Paul wait? so are you saying that you're getting your phone for free now??? charlie well, they took the 1GB statement out because everyone was pissed. yes, i'm getting my phone for free now... :) did you orde yours yet? I'll show you when I get it so you can see if it's what you want. if you've never had an iphone, it might be perfect. lots of folks who tried to switch found the G1 (not Android necessarily) to be suffocating. people try to use multi-touch gestures and their brains just freeze up because nothing happens. Paul nope. didn't order mines yet. but ya. i want to see yours and the bugs. i was one of the very first sidekick owners and it still works, but then they came out with the color one, software updates left and right, etc. charlie haha...we're spoiled...you're a perfect mac guy... Paul Paul, you lucky dog. They did say the phone was free and not the shipping charge, right? Check your credit card and refuse shipment if they charged you. T-Mobile said they would throttle down users to 50kbps before they changed the copy. Now it says: To provide the best network experience for all of our customers we may temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth. Your data session, plan, or service may be suspended, terminated, or restricted for significant roaming or if you use your service in a way that interferes with our network or ability to provide quality service to other users. This might or might not be worse. There's only 1 tard in the world... and that's Zune Tard (Zune Tattoo Guy Plans to Change His Name). David nope...I made sure they didn't charge...it's in kentucky now. they made me think I was getting it today. see? they'll screw with you. T-Mobile is worse than everyone else now. I think verizon is the most liberal so far. Sprint rose on my evilness scale because of their WiMax restrictions. Paul what restrictions? charlie no p2p or voip on wimax. just checked again...no charges...left kentucky, where Mccain has maintained a 10 lead over Obama around 4pm est. while Obama has fallen to an average of 6 points, he is up about 5 (down from 6.5 yesterday) among likely voters...my g1 will pass through a bunch of states where Obama has a lead or tied with McCain in red states... just through I dazzle a bit with my electoral knowledge. 59-35 in Ca by the way. Crazy thing is obama is leading in ND , Colorado, Missouri, and Virginia. Crazier, if Dems wants to lock out the GOP, adopt a conservative view on guns. Paul funny how the conversative view on guns actually means the opposite. Hayden Panettiere PSA: Vote for McCain David does anyone know if ups delivery on saturdays? Paul not as part of standard shipping. you would have to ship specifically for saturday delivery. same with fedex. charlie I guess I won't get it tomorrow then. Paul So how do you like your new Android phone? Chieh Cheng i like it a lot. it's difficult to use compared to the iPhone but I've had practice with Windows Mobile and Android is easier than WM stuff. frustrating, or force of habit, is that i keep doing multi-touch gestures and iPhone interface touches...and when nothing happens, my brain gets confused. I don't like the design as much. This likes like a beta version. Kind of reminds me of the original iPhone. Potential, part of "beta" but you pay to participate.. battery life is crazy short...I'm down to 50% and I hardly use it. over all, G2 should be pretty awesome. but I don't regret this one bit. I'll probably upgrade to G2 next year or something if it's good. Otherwise, I'll go back to iPhone 3.0. Paul so i talked to my at&t rep. he said that there is an htc made android phone in the works, which may come out as early as this quarter for at&t. all the carriers are going to have an android phone. i thought maybe t-mobile had a longer exclusive, guess not. hopefully we'll see it this quarter, but maybe early next. i may just hold off until i see that one as well. charlie everyone will come out with their own...the android si good...but G1 is ill-conceived... Paul
