Text Messaging with Virgin MobileI just moved from the $30 Sprint SERO plan to the $25 Virgin Mobile. Sprint runs the Virgin Mobile operation in the United States. So I wondered how different they can really be. After using the Samsung Intercept SPH-M910 on the Virgin Mobile plan, I found the biggest difference is in the text messaging (SMS) service. It turns out every carrier implements the service differently. In this thread I will document my experiences texting with various carriers using this Samsung Intercept phone on Virgin Mobile. Chieh Cheng VerizonFirst, I tried to text my Verizon cellphone. But the message didn't get through using the 10-digit Verizon cellphone number. So I reversed the direction. But the text message sent, to Virgin Mobile (VM) 10-digit cellphone number, from my Verizon phone was also lost. Next, from the VM phone, I sent a text message to Verizon phone using the e-mail address ([email protected]) and the message went through. Using the Verizon phone to send a text message to VM cellphone e-mail address ([email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]) also works. Chieh Cheng SprintLater, I played with my wife's Sprint phone. In this case, the result was exactly the same as the Verizon result. The Sprint phone couldn't send text message to the VM phone, using purely the 10-digit number, and vise-versa. Using the e-mail addresses worked fine. Chieh Cheng The more I think about these text messaging differences on different carrier, the more I'm wondering that maybe these aren't differences, but a problem. It seems that if they really intended this difference, it would be detrimental to their user base. After all, we need to communicate. I decided to send Virgin Mobile a problem report: "I sent a text, using the 10-digit number, from my Virgin Mobile phone to Verizon phone and it's not received. Chieh Cheng Virgin Mobile responded pretty quickly to my question. The following is their response. It sounds like their text messaging service should be no different than any other carrier. Perhaps, I activated my phone just when their text message service broke. We'll have to see. "Hello Chieh Chieh Cheng Looks like the problem was a system glitch. Last night, I was able to send and receive text messages from Sprint and Verizon on Virgin Mobile using the 10-digit numbers. Must have been a coincidence that their system glitched at about the same time when I activated the phone. Chieh Cheng As for this matter a person can add any virgin number to their email accounts plus vmobl.com or vmtextspix.com or yrmobl.com and get a BCC or your texts a phone access whatcha think of that crap folks. And you'd never know.So F....K. VMusa. Daniel W.
