Samsung SPH-A900M Extended Battery WoeEver since my wife got approved for her Oncology nursing conference in Las Vegas this year, I've been preparing for the trip. You might wonder if I'm preparing a slick black tux for Las Vegas's fabulous night life, or a shinning polished shoes to walk the strip. But the truth is, I've been preparing the assort of gadgets I carry on every trip: cameras, computers, cellphones, PDA, etc. After all, I am a digital photographer that got to stay connected. ;-) Normally, I already have sets of electronic hardwares ready to go for travel; all I have to do is to pick the equipment I want to bring, charge all the batteries, and go! Not this time around. I had just obsoleted my old reliable Qualcomm QCP-2670 first generation digital cellphone, and got my new Samsung A900M. So all my old cellphone accessories are obsolete as well. I had to pick up brand new accessories. My plan has unlimited calls and web access during off-peak hours, so it is perfect for staying connected. But the battery is small (see photo below) and will be easily drained if I stay on it too long. While traveling, I always carry at least one extended battery. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng So I ordered the Eforcity Replacement Extended Battery for Samsung A900 from Amazon. It arrived at my door a few days later. The battery worked fine with the phone. But guess what, it didn't come with an extended battery cover (see attached photo)! The battery is left hanging out on the back of the phone. No doubt, it will come loose from the phone. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng I was a little disappointed to get the Eforcity extended battery without cover. But I figured, I can always use two extended batteries. So I ordered Bargaincell's Brand New Samsung MM-A900 Extended Battery w/ Door (1200 mAh) through Amazon. This battery came even quicker. It was at my door the day after. And it came with a nice extended battery cover (see photo below). Attached Image: Chieh Cheng I was happy, now I can use two extended batteries with this cover. So I tried to insert Bargaincell's battery into the phone. But it won't fit! After playing with the battery for a while and comparing it to the Eforcity battery, I noticed that the Bargaincell battery is too wide (see photo below)! Attached Image: Chieh Cheng To get the Bargaincell battery to work, all I really have to do is to slim down the sides. I could already think of many ways to do that. But before I pick a method, the first thing to do is to take apart the battery. As it turn out, as I peeled off the label, I learned that the label is the package. There its two standard batteries wired in parallel under the labels. The front/side plastic rail comes right off (see photo below). Attached Image: Chieh Cheng The battery actually works in the camera phone without the plastic rail. But I figured if I just snap off one of its sides, it will fit just fine. And it does as shown in the photo below. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng To make the battery more presentable, without exposed contacts, etc., I wrapped the label back onto the battery. The label made the battery's side slightly wider. It's a tight fit, but works nevertheless (see photo below). Now I'm a happy camper . . . with Internet access! Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
