Samsung Galaxy Nexus Doesn't Support USB Mass Storage

I was really surprised when plugging the Samsung Galaxy Nexus into the computer for the first time. Rather than the familiar "USB Mass Storage" app from Android 2.2 when I pull down the USB notification, I got the "USB computer connection" screen. This screen provides two options:

Media device (MTP)
Lets you transfer media files on Windows, or using Android File Transfer on Mac (see www.android.com/filetransfer)

Camera (PTP)
Lets you transfer photos using camera software, and transfer any files on computers that don't support MTP

Neither mode allowed me to transfer files on the Mac I happened to plug the SmartPhone into. On the other hand, Windows seems to work with the MTP mode as if it is a USB mass storage device. I haven't tried Android File Transfer on the Mac yet. But USB mass storage is such a simple standard that works on all operating systems for the past few years. Why couldn't they have stuck to that?
