Qi-Enabled Phones Charge While Off?

My brother just handed me a brand new LG Google Nexus 5 and the Nexus Wireless Charger. It's pretty cool. My first question to him is whether the Nexus 5 will charge on the wireless charger even if it is off. And he said, "try it!"

So I did. I plugged in the Nexus Wireless Charger. Then I place the LG Google Nexus 5, while it is off, on top of the charging pad. I was surprised that the battery symbol showed up and there was the electronic bolt to symbolizing it was charging. Very cool!
