Is Qi Wireless Charging Efficiency Affected by Insulation?

Recently I had a chance to experiment with the Qi wireless charging on my LG Google Nexus 5. I had purchased a Wireless Charging Pad for about $17 on Amazon. First thing I did was plugging it into the USB port on my HP LP2475w monitor. Although the LG Google Nexus 5 shows the charging symbol, the charging is actually depleting.

I pulled out my Samsung USB AC adapter (5v, 1A) and plugged the Wireless Charging Pad into the wall. That charged the LG Google Nexus 5 just fine. That shows the current output is important to wireless charging. The HP LP2475w simply did not produce enough current on the USB port.

Next, I put the LG Google Nexus 5 into the GMYLE Wallet Case Classic (it's a flip-case). Then I placed it onto the Wireless Charging Pad (plugged into the wall). Again, the LG Google Nexus 5 shows charging, but its battery is actually being depleted. I'm not sure if the magnet strap on the flip-case has anything to do with it. But this is a clear indication that the case insulation does affect wireless charging efficiency.

Perhaps, the current output could overcome the case insulation. I have seen USB AC adapters that are rated at 2 amp. Currently, I'm testing the Wireless Charging Pad plugged into a desktop computer. I'll post the result when it's ready.

I have an Asus USB adapter that provides 2A current. That adapter is able to charge the LG Google Nexus 5 through the flip case on the Wireless Charging Pad. And it charged really fast.

The LG USB adapter that comes with the LG Google Nexus 5 is actually rated at 1.2A. That was also sufficient to charge the LG Google Nexus 5 through the flip case.

So it's apparent that how well your phone charges wirelessly depends on the the current and the insulation.
