Battery Connection Cleaning

I have a Qualcomm QCP-2760 cellphone. It's about ten years old. The QCP-2760 is the very first CDMA cellphone available on Sprint PCS digital network. It's an old phone and there are now tons of new phones that look and perform better than the QCP-2760. But I haven't switch yet, because I have tons of accessories that makes the QCP-2760 work like a mobile office. I have a special TXBAT032 external battery pack that keeps the phone running for hours. I also have a Spring PCS Wireless Web Connection Card to let me go on the Internet anywhere in the United States with my notebook.

For a while the phone was giving me some trouble with the two external battery packs that I have for it. The symptom of the problem is that the phone kept switching back and fourth between the internal and external batteries. If I just touch the phone or the battery pack slightly, it'll show the "Now using External Battery" or the "Now using Internal Battery" message. I thought it was the metal connectors on the battery pack not making the connection. In fact, I broke one of the connectors on one of the battery packs while trying to fix the problem.

The problem turned out to be something else. The battery connector was in fact not making the connection to the phone, but only because of all the lint gathered on the metal contact plates on the phone. The QCP-2760 cellphone has a one-piece design that is rugged and less prone to mechanical failures. So I carry it in my pocket all the time. It's interior is sealed so it is lint free. However, I have found that lint gathers on the four external battery connector on the back of the phone. This layer of lint insulates the external battery connectors from the phone.

The battery connector slits are extremely thin and small, so it was very difficult to clean the lint from the slits. Even my fingernails are too big to rub the metal contact plates clean and shining. The best way to clean it is with a thumb pin and some toilet paper. Wrap the pin tip with toilet paper. Then use the wrapped tip to scrub the metal contact plates. The thumb pinhead is quite small, so it will fit through the plastic slit just fine. The toilet paper serves as a cleaning surface. This technique works extremely well on my QCP-2760 and my external battery packs always works well after a good clean.
