MP3 players cross breedingThis morning, I took apart the iPod mini and the Rio Carbon. For those of you that don't know, iPod mini came with a Hitachi 4GB Microdrive, while Rio Carbon has a Seagate 5GB ST1 Microdrive. I did a drive swap on the two . . . I connected the Rio Carbon to my computer via the USB 2.0 cable. Then updated firmware, The drive formatted and integrated just fine. All was working great. On the other hand, I turned on the iPod mini and it showed the Apple logo. Then it showed me the exclamation mark with the file folder logo. No matter what I did, I could not get the iPod mini to update and recover. Chieh Cheng By the way, the Seagate 5 GB ST1 Microdrive seems to be different the the Hitachi 4 GB Microdrive. The Seagate 5 GB ST1 Microdrive would only work in the Rio Carbon. It would not work with any of my CF readers. And it would not even show up as a drive in my notebook's PCMCIA slot. Only the controller showed up . . . I documented in Seagate 5 GB ST1 Drive in PCMCIA The Hitachi 4 GB Microdrive works just fine in my CompactFlash reader, and I would bet that it would work in the PCMCIA slot (though I haven't tried it yet). Neither worked on my Canon EOS D30, which only supports FAT16. I'll have to try it on another digital camera that supports FAT32. Chieh Cheng I have also tried installing the IBM 1GB Microdrive in the Rio Carbon. It does not work. Chieh Cheng
