Verizon FIOS Port 80 is Now Open!

I used to host all web sites, myself, on my own home web server. But ever since I upgraded to Verizon's FIOS service, I've moved most of my web sites to a hosting service. And that is because Verizon FIOS blocks port 80.

Back then, when I checked with them about opening up port 80, they said, "Sure thing! Just upgrade to our business FIOS account and pay $100 a month." Needless to say, I couldn't afford that service.

But today, I've been very frustrated that I can't take advantage of the port 80 on my home FIOS to perform other server duties, such as running a HTTP proxy to tunnel TCP connections behind firewalls. I decided to read up a little bit about this FIOS port 80 blocking issue. And I found one web page where someone reported that Verizon FIOS had now, silently, opened up port 80.

Thrilled and skeptical at the same time. I reconfigured on of my remaining home web servers to listen in on port 80. And, indeed, that person is correct. Port 80 is now activated and open. I can reach my home web server from the Internet cloud.

i am so happy that this is enabled, i was using a dns redirect to website.com:8080/ and it was inconvenient to use services other than http at the root of the domain! now everything works perfectly! :D

I ran a server for about a month in Dec. 2009, and when I was done I shut it down. I tried to start it up again today to run some tests.... Too bad they are blocking it again.

I am sorry to hear that. It seems that my port 80 is still open.
