Google Chrome Will Not Re-Download a File

Today, I've been trying to download Seagate's DiscWizard off its web site using the new Google Chrome browser. But for some reason, the 130 MB download broke, leaving a 6.8 MB file. So I had Google Chrome download it again, but the file size didn't change. I deleted the file and downloaded again. Once again, Google Chrome copied the broken, corrupted file to my download directory. I guess Google Chrome just assumes that every file it downloads is good and that a person will never want to download a "different" version of the same file.

My Google Chrome is version 0.2.149.29. There is an updated version. I am in the process of installing it now. We'll see what happens.

Ok, Google Chrome has just finished installing itself. I have shut it down and restarted it as it suggested. This newer version is just slightly newer: 0.2.149.30.

I went to Seagate's web site again to download the DiscWizard again. Ha! Google hasn't fixed the problem. In fact, the problem is persistent between sessions. It copied the same corrupted file again. Looks like there is no way to download a file again (ever!) with Google Chrome once a download broke. Looks like I'll have to resort to other browsers.

Ok. I found a work around. You'll have to "Clear browsing data..." in Google Chrome's wrench menu. I cleared out these four default check boxes, so I'm not sure which one did the trick:

  • Clear browsing history
  • Clear download history
  • Empty the cache
  • Delete cookies

Some people prefer to keep the history and cookies.

Doing the following works fine:
* Clear download history
* Empty the cache

Ideally, google implementing a user option to ignore the cache, such as holding the [CTRL] key, would be a better solution.

Found this from Google, the problem still exists in Chrome 4.1.249.1045 (42898).

Another workaround is to save the file to another folder, for which you only need to setup Chrome to prompt you for a location to save on each download (specify a different folder to where it was previously saved). Personally, I like being able to just hit a link & it go to where I want it to be.

I've starred the linked bug (though on the Chromium page it's listed as a Feature - go figure).

Thanks for the heads-up, Baph. Do you mind posting a link to the bug report, so that I can read it and follow-up on it in the future?
