Tablets Should Become Server of ChoiceSeveral years ago, I mounted a Sony VAIO SuperSlim notebook computer to the wall to use as a server and a digital photo frame (see "Super Digital Media Terminal"). The beauty of this system is that it's power draw is so little and that its form factor can be mounted to a wall. Although this implementation is a bit slow for today's standards, it's still a working setup. This weekend, I've tried the Motorola Xoom Android tablet. Based on my Kill a Watt Measurements: Tablets, it is very green even compared to the netbook servers. And the 1GHz Tegra dual-core CPU could be faster than netbook technology. So it got me thinking that it would be nice to use these Android tablets as web servers, photo servers, or file servers. Android is already based on Linux. What does it take to port a HTTP server to it? In the future, as more and more tools become more available for the Android operating system, we may start seeing the viability of server tablets.
