Configure Your Meshtastic Radio Channels So That Only Your Friends and Family Can See Your Location

In this article, we explain how to set up the configuration so that only your friends and family can see your Meshtastic Radio's location. This article uses the Android version as example. But you may use the concept in this article with the iPhone version.

To configure your Meshtastic radio, so that only folks you know can see you, you have to change the channel settings. You can do that from the fourth tab from the left in the app. By default, the Meshtastic app has the LongFast channel sat up. This is a public channel that the entire world can see. When you are on this channel and turn on your location, the world can see where you are.

The first thing to do is to completely delete this channel. Do that by tapping the "Edit" button. Then tap the "X" button next to the channel.

Once you've deleted the LongFast channel, tap the "Add" button to add a new channel for your friends and family. You can give it any channel name. But use a random PSK. Anyone with this PSK will be able to communicate with everyone on this channel and see where everyone on this channel are located.

Toggle "Position enabled" to turn it on. Then set "Precise location". With these two setting on, your friends and family can find you on the map. Once you are satisfied with your channel setting, tap the "Save" button. Now, tap the "Send" to send the channel setting to the radio.

For everyone in your group to see each other, everyone has to have the same channel settings. To perform this task easily, scroll down the channel list to reveal the QR code (see example screen shot below).

On everyone's app, tap the "Scan" button so they can scan your QR code to apply the same channel setting. Select "Replace" and then tap "Accept" to have the channel applied to the radio.
