OLPC XO

The OLPC XO, known as childrens machine, is the less expensive laptop available in the market. It is manufactured by Quanta Computer for the non-profit OLPC (One Laptop per Child) organization. It is a great attempt to develop the learning tools for the children in the developing countries. This durable laptop provides reasonably fast performance. We can define OLPC XO as an open source machine.

This particular laptop comes with 366MHz AMD Geode processor. As it is intended for childrens learning process, memory of the laptop is available in 128 MB to 512 MB. Internal stereo speakers are attached with this laptop. In addition to that the micro phone is built in it.

Key Features

One of the key features of OLPC XO is that the Nickel-metal hydride battery used in this laptop provides the battery life anywhere from 6 to 18 hours. This feature is a great advantage to the students. Web cam is built in it and it can take at least 30 frames per second.

Video capturing facility is available in this laptop. Wireless networking is possible with this notebook as well. Directional pad and direct game buttons in OLPC XO are student friendly and make students task easier. Some of the key system components and features are:

  • Processor: AMD Geode processor 366MHz
  • Memory: 128MB to 512MB
  • Screen resolution: 1200 900
  • USB Port: Three
  • Screen Size: 7-1/2 inch

Advantage over Intel Classmate PC

OLPC XO is much cheaper than Classmate PC. At this time, you can get an OLPC XO for $200 (if you donate one to a child in developing countries). Longer battery life and the high resolution screen compare to Classmate PC are the advantages of it. Some other features of OLPC XO are the built in video camera and the directional pad. These features are not available in Intel Classmate PC.

It is more functional than Classmate PC. OLPC XO has a well integrated software platform and it is better than Classmate PC on the performance basis also.

Things to Consider

Though the OLPC XO is relatively inexpensive, the speed of OLPC XO is very slow. It does not have sufficient storage space for saving data. Processor used in it is a very lower end one and it affects the whole performance of the system. It supports only Linux and the additional 2GB memory slot has to be put in it to run windows operating system. Keyboard is too small and it has no CD or DVD reader or writer.
