Adding the Brother MFC-7820N Network Printer to Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix

If your Brother MFC-7820N is already running on your network, you can follow the instruction here to get it to work with your Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix computer. You don't need the driver disk at all, Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix will find the driver and install it for you.

On your Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix computer, select "System" tab. Then select "Printing" from the application list. If you never installed a printer before, the "Printing" screen will be blank. Otherwise, you might see some printers there. In either case, click the "Add" button on the top left-hand corner.

You will be presented with the "Select Device" screen. Click on "Network Printer". Then click on "Find Network Printer". After you do so, on the right side of the screen, you'll see a text field labeled "Host:". Type the IP address of your Brother MFC-7820N network printer into the text field. For example, the IP address for the printer on my network is "192.168.1.122", so that's what I would enter in that field. Click the "Find" button after typing in the printer IP address.

"IPP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)" will show up on the left side with the IP address you specified filled in for "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". It will be selected as well. Click on the "Forward" button on the lower right-hand side of the screen.

Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix will attempt to find the driver for your Brother MFC-7820N printer. It may take some time, but it will find the driver in the search result. It is inactive. You will have to activate it by clicking on the "Activate" button.

Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix then attempts to download the install the driver that it found for your printer. Obviously, your computer must be on the Internet to perform this step. After the driver is installed, the "Hardware Drivers" window will report that "This driver is activated and currently in use." Click on the "Close" button to continue.

Next, the "Describe Printer" screen will be shown. You can change the printer name and description, or just leave them alone. When you are done, click on the "Apply" button.

The printer set-up will ask you whether you want to printer a test page or not. Might as well do so to see if the installation really works. Click on either "Yes" or "No" to continue. If you choose to print a test page, a dialog will report that the test page has been submitted as job 1. Click "Ok" to dismiss that dialog box.

The printer properties dialog is open. You can click "Cancel" to return to the "Printing" screen. Your printer should now show up on the "Printing" screen. Pull down the "Server" menu and select "Quit" to exit the "Printing" screen. You are all done and you can print from Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix.
