Sculpteo and Shapeways 3D Printing Race

Today, we had a special opportunity to order some 3D printed parts from Sculpteo and Shapeways. From each vendor, we ordered three items distinct items. The combinations are about the same sized products and totals to about the same price as well. Using this very rare opportunity, we decided to see which vendor can produce and get the product shipped to us fastest. Throughout the process, we will be tracking when the products are printed, when they are shipped, and when they actually arrive at our door.

The two orders are placed within 10 minutes of each other. But Sculpteo's main office in France and Shapeways' main office in New York could effect the process. Sculpteo will likely 3D print and ship via its San Francisco office, which is closer to our Los Angeles location. Shapeways usually ships from New York. Our experience shows that both vendors has delays before. And with the Thanksgiving and Christmas shopping season upon us, shipping may be slowed. Let's see how they pan out.

We ordered the following products from Sculpteo:

  • Helio M727-G Underbarrel Shotgun
  • Patriot M4 Barrel Adapter
  • 30mm Slanted CRD

We ordered the following products from Shapeways:

  • TeleScopix M4 Receiver Picatinny Mount Adapter
  • Mount MP5 Scope to Picatinny Rail
  • Patriot M4 Silencer Adapter

Sculpteo estimated ship date of 12/1 with an estimated arrival of 12/4. Shapeways estimated ship date of 12/2 with an estimated arrival of 12/3 to 12/5. So the estimations between the two vendors are very close. They are basically one day off from each other. We'll see how can pull through.

Here is an after Thanksgiving update.

Shapeways finished printing all three parts on November 30th. It generated a shipping label. But November 30th is a Sunday, so shipping won't actually occur until 12/1.

Sculpteo printed the Helio M727-G Underbarrel Shotgun on 11/28 and shipped it. But 10 hours later, it issued a return request to UPS. Kinda strange.
