Ubuntu 6.06 LTS runs faster than Ubuntu 5.1!

After trying to get the Netgear MA111 USB wireless network adapter to work on my Sony VAIO PCG-748 laptop that is running Ubuntu 5.1, I decided maybe it's time to upgrade. The new Ubuntu 6.06 LTS CD-ROM has been sitting on my shelf for a while. I never really thought of running the newer version on the old Intel Pentium 266 MHz computer with only 160 MB of RAM. After all, it could only be slower right?

To install Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, I had to boot the Live CD (Live CD and Installation CD are now combined) then start the installation from the Live CD boot. The Live CD booted and executed extreme slowly on the PCG-748. The touch pad and keyboard input was barely responsive. And it took nearly 4 hours to install. I thought I've made a mistake to upgrade.

But after rebooting the computer, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS booted off the hard disk rather quickly. I thought it was faster than booting Ubuntu 5.1. And when I started using the computer, I was blown away a bit. Logging in and loading apps seems faster than Ubuntu 5.1, which was just bearable with a slight of pain. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS doesn't seem to have any speed problem loading the Terminal.

Overall, I've changed my mind about upgrading to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. Now I am seriously considering doing the same with my 300 MHz Sony VAIO PCG-505TS SuperSlim notebook. On the other hand, upgrading to 6.06 LTS didn't solve the USB wireless network adapter problem.

Don't try this trick with the LiveCD thought. 6.06 LTS Live CD runs painfully slow on the PCG-748 notebook compared to the 5.10 LiveCD.
