Sony VAIO PCG-748 - Setup the Screen Resolution on Xubuntu 6.1After unsuccessfully installing Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and Ubuntu 7.04, I decided to install Xubuntu 6.1. The installation wasn't very difficult and succeeded the first time. But during boot, the screen was so dark, I couldn't see anything. The screen returned to normal at log-in, but the resolution was 800x600, far from the optimal 1024x768 that the LCD supports. First thing first, to let Xubuntu 6.1 use 1024x768, change "DefaultDepth 24" in "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" to "DefaultDepth 16". The NeoMagic graphics card just don't have enough memory to run with more colors. Next, to fix the boot up display, edit the "/boot/grub/menu.lst" file. Append "vga=791" to the first occurrence of the following line: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet splash The boot up screen still seems a little dark. But now I can at least see the logo. Reducing the color depth works wonderfully. The fonts are now nice and crisp. Chieh Cheng
