Sony PCG-505VX Power Connector

I have just gotten my hands on two Sony VAIO SuperSlim notebooks: the PCG-505R and the PCG-505VX. The PCG-505R is seems identical to my Sony VAIO SuperSlim PCG-505TS, except it's got a 233 MHz processor, rather than a 300 MHz processor. It also has a Japanese keyboard.

The PCG-505VX, on the other hand, seems to be quite a different beast. Rather than the round power connector that comes with most other notebooks, it's got a rectangular power connector with two pins. I have never seen such connectors on a PCG-505 SuperSlim before. Searching for the PCG-505VX yields virtually no results. At this point, I have no idea where (what market, what country) the PCG-505VX has been sold.

It has been difficult to source a notebook power supply for the PCG-505VX. The eBay stores and all the online stores claims that the PCG-505VX uses the same round connector as the other PCG-505VX (see photo below). But I can guarantee you that it doesn't. It uses a rectangular connector, which I will post a photo of in the future. First thing I need to do is to figure out the polarity of the pins. If anyone has any idea, I'd love to hear it.

I did manage to find the actual Sony power supply for the PCG-505VX notebook computer from Impact Computers and Electronics (see "Related Links" below). But the AC adapter is $120! Ouch. Here is a photo of the power supply and the square tip . . .

Looks like it's much cheaper to get the PCGA-AC5N AC ADAPTOR from Sony Direct Accessories & Parts Center (DAPC) (see "Related Links" below) for $82.95 (search for "141851851"). But this AC adapter doesn't include the power cord, which you might be able to find a spare at home. You can also source the power cord from Sony DAPC for $17.26 (search for "178261431"). The combination is still cheaper at $100.21.

I used a digital multimeter on the pins today. Based on my measurements, the pin on the left (see photo below), if you are looking from inside the computer, seems to be the ground pin. This seems to be confirmed by the round dot next to the hot pin. You can kind of make that out next to the right pin and the red speaker wire pin.

The photo below shows the USB, Firewire, and the power connector from left to right.

I see why searching for "PCG-505VX" yields almost no results. Upon looking at the model number more carefully, it looks like I read it wrong. The actual model number of this computer is PCG-N505VX (note the letter 'N'). It looks so much like my other PCG-505 SuperSlim laptops, that I just thought it is the same model. But after taking it apart, it's obviously not the same.
