Replacing the Hard Drive on the Sony VAIO PCG-748 NotebookThe hard drive on the Sony VAIO PCG-748 is easy to remove and replace. It almost feels like it has a built-in removable drive tray. Too bad I don't have multiple trays, otherwise, I could swap hard drive and operating systems all day long. The hard drive tray is located on the left side of the notebook computer, by the power button. The photo below shows the drive tray cover. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng To remove the drive tray, all you have to do is to slide the cover downward (shown in the photo below). Attached Image: Chieh Cheng After pulling out the hard drive, you'll have to unmount the drive from the tray. The hard drive is fixed to the tray with four drive screws on both sides of the drive. Remove those screws. But before pulling the drive out of the tray, you have to be very careful. The drive tray uses surface mount ribbon cable to connect to the hard drive. One wrong move and you'd have an useless drive try. Carefully pry the drive up and flip it over (see the photo below). The ribbon cable is then fully exposed and you can slowly remove the connector from the drive. Attached Image: Chieh Cheng
