"Still waiting for root Device" on HP dv1227us

I've tried to install Mac OS X on the HP dv1227us. But so far, I've only gotten the "Still waiting for root Device" message. Has anyone gotten past this issue on this notebook, or something similar?

Someone suggested that "DVD rom uses a chipset that is not supported". Sounds like a plausible explanation. I'm wondering if an USB adapter will work on the HP dv1227us. But I don't remember seeing USB boot options in the BIOS . . .
