Determine Whether the MSi Wind U100 Web Cam is On or Off

The MSi Wind U100 has a built-in web cam. But it's not always on. In fact, it's turned off by default. To turn it on you'll have to press Fn-F6. After installing Mac OS X, there is no on-screen indication to let you know if the webcam is on or off. But there is an easy way to determine that in Mac OS X.

To see the web cam, pull down the Apple menu. Select "About This Mac". Click the "More Info..." button. Click on "USB" that is under the "Hardware" category.

At this point, you will see a number of devices under the USB Device Tree. If the web cam is on, it'll show up in this list. If it is off, then it won't. When the web cam is on, you'll see the "BisonCam, NB Pro" under "USB High-Speed Bus" within the "USB Device Tree". The screen shot below shows that the web cam is on.

You can toggle the web cam on/off to see the difference. The USB Device Tree does not update in real-time. That means every time you toggle the web cam on/off, you'll have to refresh the list. You can do that by pressing Command-R.

OMG!! Was this all I had to do? Fn+F6?!??!? OMG!! Thank you SO MUCH for this help! :) I have been struggling with this device many many months!
And I couldn`t find help on MSI-internet sites, and I was going fustrated..

Now, I have an interesting situation. The F6 key on my MSI u100 is broken. Is there any other way to turn it on? Can I "fake" the keystroke somehow with software?

Just found this list looking for cam use on Msi wind under Mac OsX 10.6.
My cam doesn't show as described above with Fn-F6 and command-R attempts.

is there a known driver to install?

Wow, all this time I just figured the webcam was broken somehow 'cause I got this thing used. Thank you so much! Why on earth would they do that?
