Motorola XOOM Booting Endlessly

Yesterday, I experienced a strange symptom with my Motorola XOOM. It rebooted itself, but it didn't stop booting. Every so often, I'd see the Android desktop, but the tablet automatically reboots again.

A soft reset (holding the power button and holding the volume up button) did not solve the button. The soft reset causes it to reboot, but it still doesn't stop booting.

I ended up having to use the Android recovery screen to wipe the full data and do a factory reset to resolve this issue. The following is the process:

  1. Perform a soft reset by holding the power button and the volume up button.
  2. When the Motorola logo appears, wait two seconds. Then press and hold the volume down key. (If you don't wait two seconds you'll get the fastboot option, rather than the Android recovery screen.)
  3. When the Android recovery text appears (in the upper left), release the volume down button. Then press the volume up button.
  4. When the Android with exclamation point graphic appears, hold the power button down and press the volume up button. Android recovery menu will appear in the upper left corner of the screen.
  5. Use the volume up/down buttons to select "wipe date/factory reset".
  6. Press the power button to select the option.
  7. Use the volume up/down buttons to select "Yes -- delete all user data".
  8. Press the power button to select the option.
  9. When prompted, use the power button to reboot the system.

In the Android recovery menu, you can also try the "clear cache partition" option first. I have tried it and it has not worked for me. In my case, wiping the data and performing a factory reset is the only option that worked.
