CompactFlash slot on HP and Compaq iPAQ

I have a Compaq iPAQ 3955 Pocket PC personal data assistant (PDA). It it probably one of the nicer PDA's. I never had a real problem with it . . . until I dropped it on the ground, which screwed up the pins in the SD Card slot. I've fixed it since then, but it still flakes out at time. Worst of all, it corrupts my data every once in a while. So now, I'm looking to permanently solder a SD Card in place. Perhaps a storage card or a wireless card. If I do that, I'll need a solution to get data off it.

That's when I saw the Nexian NXC3100 NexiCam Digital Camera for iPaq Pocket PC. This digital camera is not very useful. And it is quite outdated by today's standards. But I noticed that it has a CompactFlash slot. The question is, whether the iPAQ can recognize the slot natively, or is the slot only used by the digital camera. I searched around, but no one has covered that topic.

Luckily MobilePlanet is selling the NexiCam for only $20! It doesn't cost must to find out and a lot to gain. I quickly ordered one.

The NexiCam arrived today. I didn't even bothered to install the software that came with it. I don't intend on using its camera features. Really, I just wanted to access the CompactFlash. Sliding the iPAQ into the NexiCam is easy. But iPAQ didn't recognized the expansion without the software. It asked for a driver. I just ignored it pressed OK.

It turned out that the iPAQ recognized the CompactFlash drive natively, even though it didn't recognize the NexiCam digital camera. How perfect?

The only problem is that the NexiCam doesn't have a LCD cover protector for the iPAQ. And the iPAQ asks for the device driver every time you turn it on. Also, the NexiCam is huge! It barely fits in my hand. So I'm dealing with it by keeping it off the iPAQ most of the time and only install it when I need to transfer data off of it.

Overall, I find that the NexiCam is the most affordable solution if you need a CompactFlash slot on the iPAQ.
