League of Legends: Tank is Actually Fun and Easy to Play
Two nights ago, I played tank for the first time in my League of Legends career. It was an ARAM game where I got matched up with nine other players that I didn't know anything about. I rolled Malphite, which I never had ever thought I would ever play. Never played a tank champion before, I started consulting my hind-brain for a crash course in League of Legends strategy (meta).
First of all, our team consists of Malphite, Master Yi, Fiddlestick, Veigar, and Annie. The other team consists of Miss Fortune, Warwick, Ashe, Sivir, and Wukong. It seems that the other team is heavy in the attack damage (AD) side.
From what I've heard, tanks usually build armor, magic resist, or health. With a heavy AD enemy team, it's probably best to build a lot of health and a bit of armor. So that's the route I decided to take with Malphite. I never tried it, so I don't know if it is any good.
But it turned out to work quite well. I stayed in front of my team most of the time, tanking most of the attack. Only time I moved to the back of the team is when I'm really low on health. I also initiate the fight with Malphite's "Unstoppable Force", which charges into the enemy team. A few times I actually charged to the back of the enemy's team, killing their squishy champions. Surprisingly, I got quite a number of kills; matching or exceeding that of my other team mates. Maybe it was because I was using my marksman masteries and runes. In fact, I had the first kill. I never realized that playing a tank could be so much fun.
I played mostly marksman (carry), which took a lot of finesse, patience, and timing. The tank, on the other hand, seems rather easy to play with these basic rules:
- Don't tank for yourself (when no other team mates are around).
- Always block incoming hits that are aimed at your squishy team mates.
- Stand in front of your team in a fight.
- Initiate a fight when your team mates are around.
- Buy health, armor, or magic resist or any combination.
- Attack the nearest squishy champion.
