Getting Diablo II to Work on Windows Vista

I have just learned from my friend that he was having trouble running Diablo II on his Windows Vista machine. And yet, I've been running it merrily on Vista for the past few weeks. After our discussion, we have deduced that you must install the latest patch in order for it to work. At the time of this writing the latest patch is 1.12a, which you can download from Blizzard's web site.
