Unable to start Steam Engine

Today, I decided to start up Steam again. I haven't played any games for a while, so I figured that Steam probably needs updating. But after it updated, it gave me the following error message:

Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to start Steam Engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12eba4) failed with error 1: The registry is in use by another process, timeout expired.

I started to freak out. I have a lot of games on the Steam engine. I loaded it up again. It loads, but it is extremely slow. It stopped responding at times. Finally, after 10 minutes, it finally loaded completely.

im haveing the same problem too its annoying me i just got counter strike and the i wake up today it have it saying that. i have windows vista

i have the same prob and i have tons of games to so im scared that icant get it going
