Maybe hold off on BF3?There appears to be quite a lot of complaints about Origin and how difficult it is to even play BF3. Punkbuster, Origin, etc. all seem to be hampering the overall experience. Check out the Amazon user reviews here: Battlefield 3 [Download] What do you think? Hold off for a while? TL I wasn't planning on getting it anyway. At least not until it is stable and cheap. JM I bet you it works nice and smooth on the PS3, this sounds to me like COD all over again, they started out as a beautiful PC game, once they started making money on PS3 the PC version was useless. It was so bad that I abandoned the PC series all together. FS I'm definitely getting BF3 ... maybe when I'm less busy. There are issues, but the online multiplayer mode is just unbeatable. The percentage of time you deal with UI is too small comparing to the time you spend playing the game. RC I was planning on $7.50 on steam like I paid for BFBC2 ;) EC Seems like the hardcore people are going back to, or sticking with, BF2 because of omitted features, e.g., Commander. I read from somewhere else that BF3 is what you would consider a "Bad Company 3," incremental changes over the last Battlefield game but nothing revolutionary. Yes I agree: wait for a sale to get it down in price. I'd consider paying $20 for it. If I was building a new gaming PC I'd be all over the i7 2600K CPU and the free BF3 bundle prior to Thanksgiving. In short, as long as you have a dual-core CPU, you will be fine CPU-wise, but you need a hell of a graphics system to make it look pretty and play smoothly (unless you don't care about turning down the details). TL Let's go back to play BF2 again. I played BF2 for 15 mins last night to test my game reinstall. It was pretty fun. Kind of miss it. Missed the maps. The i7 26xx will be an overkill. Base on my game tests of using 1) AMD Phenom II N930 / ATI 5650 and 2) Intel i7 2630QM / Nvidia 560m notebooks . . . running at 1920x1080 . . . I found that neither quad core processors are breaking a sweat. The games are still GPU bound. So I agree with your analysis. CC Hi All, I got BF3 and basically what everyone has mentioned is pretty accurate, including things mentioned in the older email. But here are my thoughts to re-cap... (keep in mind I have only played the largest 64 player maps) * Overall, the environment feels less destructible than BC2. This is partly the result of the maps they made and the use of more indestructible walls/terrain. They could have easily use more of the destructible buildings if they wanted to so I'm not sure why they didn't. I'm sure if they re-made the BC2 maps on BF3, you would not feel cheated. For example, the oasis map on BC2 contains a billion destructible buildings. There isn't an equivalent map in BF3. Second, it's harder to destroy things now. While this may be more realistic, it's certain not more fun. Who doesn't like to destroy things easily! * Game lobby is now a web page. This might be purely a matter of preference but I find it super super annoying. A consequence of this is that you can't change your game setting while in the game lobby. And you only load the game when you find a server. This means you can't adjust any game settings until you get into a match. Which results in me idling many times. I know there's 32 guys on a team but every man counts! * Bugs, Bugs, Bugs... yes I can confirm the game is quite buggy right now. Most of the time it results in my client crashing or the server crashing. Or even errors during game start. The only positive here is that they seem to be fixing the issues, at least I've noticed considerable improvements in the game lobby (initially the ping times weren't working, now they are). Of course, considerable improvements from a low bar is not saying much. * Aircraft is not as overpowered as BF2! This is the one area I'm super happy about. No more pesky uber ace pilot to dominate a round. Don't get me wrong, a good pilot can still wreck havoc but is not longer invincible like it was in BF2. In BF2, unless you were also a super ace pilot, you stopped playing maps with aircraft. The main reason for the balance is more anti aircraft weapons now. And you can't just fly over your runway to get an immediate fix anymore. * Ton of weapon/gadget unlocks. Again more preference but I tend to like simpler. There are now specific unlocks for specific weapons. For example, each machine gun has a different scope unlock. So if you get a 4x scope unlock for your ump, that doesn't get you the 4x scope for your m16. There are also other unlocks like grip, bipod, barrel, etc and each weapon can have 3 gadgets applied to it! So if you like super customization then this is good for you. * Origin. Yea you heard it, origin is not steam. But if it makes you feel better, steam got hacked, origin didn't (yet). * Sucky maps. Maps are a huge deal. Even in BF2, playing on a good map versus bad map makes all the difference. Bad maps are just no fun! While good maps are awesome! Right now, there are no maps that I really like so the conclusion is that this is really dragging down my opinion for the game. Luckily they already announced the back to Karkand expansion which includes the nice maps from BF2. Then it will be a fair apples to apples comparison and I'll know whether it's the game, or the maps. I want Karkand! Finally, my overall impression.... it does not feel like a typical battlefield game for some reason. Having played BF1942, BF2, BF2142, BC2, I have some experience here and I can tell you it's doesn't feel the same. But I can't tell you why. You still have the same scale but something is missing. For now, I like to say the squad/team experience is lacking but there's no reason it should. You still have all that squad based goodness. Or maybe it's as simple as not having great maps. But I'm glad that you chimed in because I believe you're the only one in this thread that currently have BF3. P.S. in my book, no game is worth $60, because it will be possible to get it at some point in the future for much, much less. In BF3's case, I have seen recent deals on it for $40. So, right there, $60 is paying too much for it. Also, Origin has activated some coupon codes to knock off $$$ on their games--so far, BF3 is excluded from those deals, but that can change someday. TL I don't know ... to me just because i can get it cheap, it doesn't mean it's not worth it. It's all about how much fun you can get out of it. A game that is not so fun, I wouldn't even pay a penny for it (I probably wouldn't bother for even if it's free); but if I can get a lot of fun out of it for quite some time, then $60 is well spent. That doesn't mean I don't want to get it cheaper though, who doesn't like cheap. RC
