no audio playing MKV filesVideo files with the MKV extensions are based on the Matroska extensible open standard Audio/Video container. I have been using Matroska Pack version 1.0.2 to play my MKV files. But like every other file format, it keeps improving. Recently, I came across a few MKV files that play, but not audio channel. So the first thing I did was to visit the Matroska web site (see Related Links below) to see it there is a newer version to download. Sure enough, version 1.1.2 is now available. I downloaded both the full pack and the lite pack to try. I installed the lite pack first, but the no audio symptom persisted. I uninstalled the lite pack and installed the full pack next. It worked. I was able to play the new MKV files with audio. I experimented first on my notebook computer, but it's not where I wanted the codec. I have an entertainment computer where I wanted to install the codec. But when I installed the full pack on my entertainment computer I got the same no audio symptom. After playing with the executables that came with the Matroska pack, I noticed that they couldn't find the MSVCR71.DLL file. I searched for the dynamic link library (DLL) on my notebook and copied it onto my entertainment computer. It worked! I was able to play MKV files with audio. It's apparent that Matroska pack needs this DLL to work. The developers assumed that MSVCR71.DLL is already installed. It's a popular DLL as I found over ten copies on my notebook computer, installed by various software applications. But since I did't install any extra software on my entertainment machine, Matroska wasn't able to find this DLL. Chieh Cheng
