VNC - Remote Desktop for Microsoft Windows XP Home

If you ever tried to access your Windows XP Home Edition remotely, you'll find that it's missing the remote access function. That means you can't use Remote Desktop Connection on another computer to access your Windows XP Home Edition machine. That is . . . unless you know about VNC.

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. Much like Remote Desktop, it lets you control a remote computer as if you are sitting at the remote computer. Simply install a VNC server on your Windows XP Home Edition machine. Then install a VNC client on the computer you want to use to remotely log-in. Then you can control your Windows XP Home Edition machine at will. You no longer have to be envious of those who has installed the Windows XP Professional Edition.

One of the best VNC software on the market is UltraVNC. UltraVNC includes both server and client, so that you can install the same software on both machines. Best of all, UltraVNC is free Open Source software. You can get a copy of UltraVNC from "Related Links" below. When you install UltraVNC as a server, make sure you enable the following two options (show in screen shot below):

Register UltraVNC Server as a system service
Start or restart UltraVNC service

By the way, you'll want to use a fast network . . . say 802.11g. The slower 802.11b is usable, but you will really feel it. Move and resizing the windows is not very responsive with 802.11b. And sometimes, the screen just freezes while the network traffic is catching up.
