Stereo or Mono Mic Input?

I have gone through many desktop and notebook computers in the past. One thing I noticed is that you can never know if your computer came with stereo or mono microphone input. Sometimes my PC mic would work with one computer and not another. Finally, I realized it's because some computers have stereo microphone input, while others have mono input.

The easiest way to determine if your mic input is stereo or mono is to look at the "Volume Control" dialog in Windows. If your microphone balance is disabled (you can't change it), then you have a mono microphone input. The following screen capture shows a disabled microphone balance.

On the other hand, if your microphone balance is enabled, then you have stereo microphone input. The following screen capture shows "Volume Control" dialog where microphone balance is enabled.
