Seagate Expansion External Drive Disassembly

Thanks muchly for your post. Your comment "you will break off several, if not all, of the tabs" made the task much simpler :-) Many thanks. I didn't realize it was a SATA drive until I pulled it apart. I was working on a friend's old computer and thought I'd back up his hard drive 1st and this external drive I was using looked like it would work. Nope. However I do have a bunch of SATA drives around, so with your help I now have an easy way to work with them. Thanks again. ... Michael

Interesting. I just put in a Western Digital 1.5tb into the device and Windows 7 gave a pop-up saying it recognized a 'Seagate' device, but it doesn't show up anywhere.

You probably have to prepare it using Disk Management:

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Create and format hard disk partitions

It should show up there. Then you can delete it, repartition it, and reformat it.

Just got it working. Went to Administrator (heck if I know why Windows 7 doesn't allow me to everything under my own (admin) id), selected msconfig, then tools, then launch computer management. From disk management there, I could format it. Using my own id (which has Admin privs) no way could I get to disk management - weird. Anyway, going to Device Management, it still thinks it's a Seagate drive. Interesting, eh? (By the way I don't have a Systems and Maintenance icon - only the usual SYSTEM one. I'll see from what I've learned if I can create one. Thanks muchly for your help.

My model ST315005EXA101-RK , the usb PCB port is beoken and i have throw it away.Is there any aftermarket enclosure compatible with this hard disk? I have searched the biggest IT store in my area and it is not avail. Please help.

Any 3.5-inch SATA enclosure will work. However, I prefer docks so that you can swap hard drives in and out . . . like one of these: Plugable USB 3.0/2.0 SATA Hard Drive Docking Station (LucidPort chipset)

Don't even think to use a screwdriver! ! !
Do use a thin flat knive to pull the tabs apart, I have done this in one minute without breaking anything or marring the look of the case. Difficulty: eazy
I used a thin pocket knife, you do need a sharp edge to wedge it neatly.

The drive inside my seagate expansion croaked so i opened it up and replaced it with a 2TB WD caviar green
On windows 7 went to disk managment and created a simple volume partition now its working perfect thanks to this forum!!

I tried a 4 TB drive and it only recognizes 2TB (actually 1.8TB). I am guessing there is a firmware issue on the PCB.
