Recording Music Through Analog MeansRecently, one of the online streaming video's had a really catchy tune. I couldn't help but wanting to play it back all the time. I wanted to put it on my MP3 player. Since it is a streaming video, it's not possible to extract the sound track out of a file on my hard disk. I could only resort to analog means. I have two head-phone outputs on my notebook and a microphone input. The microphone input happens to be stereo (see "Stereo or Mono Mic Input? article). I took a stereo to stereo plug and looped the headphone output to the microphone input (see photo below). Then i plugged a headphone to the second headphone output so that I can monitor the audio. I used Sound Recorder to record the audio, but that caused a conflict. Sound Recorder could only record audio length up to 60 seconds (1 minute). It's a really crippled software. But it's easy and quick to use, my favorite. A quick search on Google revealed that Microsoft, itself, has published a Sound Recorder hack (see "How to Increase the Maximum Recording Time in the Sound Recorder Utility") to extend its recording length. After working through the Sound Recorder issue, I was able to record till my heart's content. Chieh Cheng
