Will Dell's Adamo Take a Bite Out of Apple's MacBook?

Sometimes you wonder what manufacturers are thinking when they come out with a new product that seems super-expensive in an already crowded marketplace. This is the case with Dell, Inc.'s laptop, dubbed “Adamo,” which was just released with a list price starting at $1,999 and going upward from there, depending on how deluxe you want to go. The name Adamo is Latin for “to fall in love with,” and that is what Dell is hoping – that consumers will fall in love with this sleek, new ultrathin beauty, which begins shipping in just a few days. Adamo is impressive and upscale, and is designed to compete with Apple's MacBook Air and Hewlett Packard's Voodoo Envy 133, both of which are part of the ultrathin category and priced competitively. (MacBook's Air is $1,800 and HP's Voodoo Envy is $1,900.)

Adamo comes in two stylish color combinations, silver aluminum with a pearl finish and onyx aluminum with a brushed finish. It sounds impressive already!

With a profile of only .65 inches thick and weighing just four pounds, Adamo is equipped with a 1386-by-768-pixel, 13.4” display. Performance wise, the base unit is comes with a 1.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with Centrino technology and 2GB 800 MHz DDR3 dual channel memory. If you want to upgrade to a 2.4 Ghz processor and 4 GB of memory, it will cost you around $2,699, depending on what other extras you want to throw in. Both models come with a 128 GB solid-state drive, Wireless N, Bluetooth 2.1 and one RJ-45 port. The built-in, fully enclosed batter is expected to deliver at least five hours on a full charge, but that, of course, is subject to personal power consumption issues.

Dell's Adamo comes with a full size keyboard, complete with backlighting and a scalloped, metallic key cap design. The keys are wide, flat and very comfortable. Other integrated features include a 1.3-megapixel digital camera and digital microphone, two USB 2.0 ports, a hybrid USB and eSATA port, an Ethernet jack, a headphone jack and a display port output. Mobile broadband is an option.

Units ship with Windows Vista Home Premium version and standard Dell add-ons, such as Adobe Reader, Roxio Creator DE, Dell Webcam application, Dell Video Chat, Power DVD 8 and a 30-day trial to McAfee Security Center.

For the most part, Dell is known for its affordable, no frills computers that appeal to budget conscious consumers and small businesses. Releasing the Adamo at a time when the economy is tanking is taking a big risk for Dell, especially as personal computer sales have dipped to the lowest levels in years. However, the company is counting on Adamo's sexy and sleek design to appeal to consumers who need and want a change. Perhaps buying this ultrathin beauty is just what the doctor ordered to stimulate the economy. At least that is what Dell is hoping. Stay tuned as Dell's Adamo begins arriving on doorsteps soon!
