Using Remote Desktop on the OLPC XO

I've always enjoyed using my older and slower computer as thin clients to my Windows servers. Remote Desktop Connection make my obsolete computer feel like server grade machines.

So I was thrilled to find rdesktop (Linux equivalent of Remote Desktop Connection) pre-installed on the OLPC XO. I launched it to connect to my server, but the remote desktop only took up a small portion of the XO's display. I thought that the XO had a 800x600 display.

Intrigued, I tried 1024x768. And it was stil too small. Next, I tried 1280x1024. That ended up being too big. I was utterly confused. Some folks had said that in color mode, the screen resolution was 800x600. While in B&W mode, the screen resolution ws 1200x900.

Well, after digging, I have found that the native resolution to be 1200x900. It is just that it is limited to displaying only one color per pixel, thereby giving the perception that its resolution is only 800x600. So for rdesktop, you should specify a resolution of 1200x900 as below:

rdesktop -g1200x900 -a16 [host]

The "-a16" tells the remote server to use 16-bit color, thereby speeding up communication on XO's limited wireless bandwidth. Substitute "[host]" with the name or the IP of your remote server.

cool...I'll definitely give this a try. just as soon as I find the power adapter to my XO. For some reason, I can't seem to find it.
