MSi Wind U100 is an Excellent Notebook Server

After a disaster with my MSi Wind U100-279US netbook, I have learned that it is an excellent notebook book server. It is fast enough for most purposes. It has a build-in ethernet board to be connected via the reliable wired network. The energy consumption is at the same level as notebooks from ten years ago. The hard drive is more than big enough for most server situations. The netbook turns on and reboots even with the lid closed. I have been running it as a notebook server for several days and am extremely pleased with its capabilities so far.

One short-coming is that the only "on" indicator is on the power button, which is under the lid. So with the lid closed, you can't tell it's on. It's also so quite, that you can't tell it's running by the sound. I'm sure some people would see this as a feature, because you can now have a stealth server in your room and it won't disturb you when you sleep.

I realise this thread has not been viewed for a long time, I installed Windows Server 2008 on my U100 and the ethernet hardware is not detected, when I install the LAN drivers I get an error (File not detected or something like that), the error does not give a error number or anything. Also the wifi drivers for Windows Server do not work.

Did you install Windows server 2003? I might try that tomorrow.

No. I had Windows XP Professional on it before. Just recently, I wiped it and installed Windows Vista Ultimate.

For the record, i've sucesessfully installed a 2008 server on a u100. Everything execpt NIC works out of the box, but just google the rlt8101 PCIe driver for vista/2008. Works like a charm for DC, DNS, DHCP and fileserver. Havent had any real issues yet! Perfect for a home where you have a few laptops or ipads or whatever. Good luck
