LP140WF3 (SPXL1) 1920x1080 LCD Screen Works on Asus G46vw!

My Asus G46vw gaming laptop comes with a 14" 1366x768 display. It's a really awesome compact and robust notebook computer that has 5 hours of battery life. But the screen resolution is a bit low. A few years ago, I found the LP140WF3 (SPXL1) LCD panel, which offers 1920x1080 resolution in the compact 14" format. It has the same 30-pin monitor interface that the Asus G46vw uses. So I figure that it's a direct swap.

But for some reason, after swapping it, it shows the Asus ROG logo on start up. But the screen remains black upon booting into Windows. I couldn't figure out why that is the case for the longest time. Being disheartened, I put back the old display panel.

But tonight, I was adventurous again, because I decided it was time to speed up this awesome gaming notebook computer with a MSATA SSD and a faster Intel i7 CPU. After swapping in the LCD panel, it was again black screen. But rather than being disheartened, I plugged the laptop into an external HDMI monitor. Using the second screen, I tried to update the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver. That didn't work.

Next, I uninstalled the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver and search for new hardware again. Windows simply put back the same driver. But I uninstalled it again and rebooted the computer. This caused Windows 10 to install some updates that it has scheduled. It took a long time for it to install the updates and restart itself.

Surprise, surprise! After Windows rebooted the computer, the LCD screen worked perfectly! Not sure if it was rebooting Windows without the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver or the Windows updates that fixed it.

But the screen works! Now I have great resolution on this trusty laptop.
