Java Freezes on Acer Aspire One AO722-BZ454

I have this Acer Aspire One netbook, running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). When ever I launch a Java GUI app, such as a stand-alone WebStart app or an applet in the browser, Java hangs. I have installed JDK, JRE, 64-bit, and 32-bit; and uninstalled/reinstalled them all. But the same symptom occurs.

I tested with the demo in JDK using appletviewer, but the same symptom occurs; it just freezes at "starting applet...". There was no error message on the command line. Command-line Java apps ran fine without any problems.

Anyone know how I can troubleshoot this problem further?

I'm still facing this problem. While trying to close the Windows of a non-responding Java program, I saw the Windows non-responding dialog box, which claims that "Java(TM) Platform SE binary is not responding". The dialog lets me:

1. Check for solution and close the program.
2. Close the program.
3. Wait for the program to respond.

Under view problem details, I see the following text:

I have this problem. Looked into it a bit online and some discussion seems to indicate it's graphics card related. The Acer Aspire One AO722-BZ454 has a AMD Radeon HD 6290 graphics card. I'm running the Java applications on the laptop over Remote Desktop, so it might be related to the Remote Desktop compatibility over Remote Desktop.

For giggles, I change the Remote Desktop session color depth (normally running at 16-bits). 24-bits and 32-bits shows the same problem symptom. However, the Java application ran just fine in 8-bits color depth. So it is somehow related. Running in 8-bit is a real PITA though.
